The UAE has unveiled a landmark humanitarian project aimed at tackling food insecurity worldwide, with His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum announcing the launch of the 1 Billion Meals Dates Factory — set to become the world's largest endowment-based dates factory.

The facility, currently under development in Margham, Dubai, will have an annual production capacity of 150 million date-based food units, with its entire output dedicated to supporting underprivileged communities across the globe.

The project is a key initiative under the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives (MBRGI) and is funded by an AED 200 million donation from businessman Mirwais Azizi. Operations will be managed by Al Barakah Dates, building on its established partnership with the MBRGI.

Speaking at the announcement, Sheikh Mohammed said the factory represents a message of hope and a reflection of the UAE's commitment to human dignity.

"Our philanthropy initiatives are ongoing, for giving remains the UAE's true purpose and identity,"

he said.

The factory will process dates — sourced exclusively from UAE farms — into nutritionally fortified products enriched with vitamins and minerals. The initiative is designed to strengthen the country's palm cultivation sector and expand its green spaces, while also generating jobs and broadening the reach of UAE food exports.

Construction is expected to be complete by the end of 2027. The project comprises a main facility and a dedicated operational and storage unit, powered by advanced food production technologies.

The initiative aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals 2030 and reinforces the UAE's standing as a global hub for both food production and humanitarian action.
