The Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) has launched a four-day workshop in Dubai in collaboration with the World Health Organisation (WHO) to promote the health of the elderly and formulate a national response plan for dementia.

Attended by Dr. Hussain Abdul Rahman Al Rand, Assistant Undersecretary for the Public Health Sector, the event brought together health experts from various UAE authorities to discuss strategies for enhancing support for senior citizens.

This workshop aligns with WHO’s Decade of Healthy Ageing, emphasizing improved healthcare access, healthy practices, and innovative solutions for ageing populations. The initiative aims to create a comprehensive national framework that fosters an age-friendly environment, enabling older adults to lead healthy, active lives while actively contributing to society.

Dr. Al Rand highlighted the UAE’s commitment to this cause, noting the National Policy for Senior Emiratis, which provides essential support services to ensure dignified living conditions for the elderly. This policy reflects the Emirati values of respect and care for seniors.

Globally, around 50 million people live with dementia, a figure expected to triple by 2050. The WHO’s 10-year strategy emphasizes sustainable collaboration among governments, civil society, and private sectors, aiming to enhance the quality of life for older adults and their communities, ultimately establishing the UAE as a leader in promoting active and healthy ageing.
