Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), in partnership with the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), has completed 10 out of 16 planned Truck Rest Stops.
These facilities are strategically located along major roads including Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, Emirates Road, and others, catering to the heavy daily truck traffic in Dubai. The rest stops cover over 75,000 square metres, offering over 5,000 parking slots for trucks and heavy vehicles, with each facility capable of accommodating 30 to 45 vehicles. Amenities include prayer rooms, diesel refuelling stations, and restrooms for drivers.
Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA, emphasized that these rest stops enhance traffic safety by reducing truck-related incidents by 50% and improving traffic flow during truck ban periods. They also prevent trucks from parking on main roads and in residential areas. The selection of rest stop locations was based on comprehensive studies to ensure maximum efficiency and support for the land transport sector.
Al Tayer highlighted the benefits of public-private partnerships in infrastructure projects, noting that such collaborations enhance service quality and facilitate knowledge transfer between the private and public sectors. The partnership with ADNOC aims to reinforce Dubai's position as a global logistics hub while ensuring the safety and well-being of truck drivers by providing essential services.
In 2023, RTA signed an agreement with ADNOC to construct and operate a major integrated truck rest area near Emirates Road. This facility spans over 76,000 square metres and can accommodate 150 vehicles. It includes a range of services such as a motel, maintenance workshops, restaurants, and medical facilities, ensuring comprehensive support for drivers' needs.
RTA's commitment to the land transport sector is underscored by its comprehensive study of truck movements in Dubai, which aims to enhance future infrastructure planning and improve the efficiency of truck and goods movement across the city.
