OpenAI will roll out new parental controls on ChatGPT within the next month, following a lawsuit filed by the parents of a teenager who died by suicide.
The company said the tools will give parents more visibility into how their children use the platform and allow them to step in when needed. Among the planned features is an alert system that notifies parents if ChatGPT detects a child in acute distress.
OpenAI is also considering options for teens, with parental oversight, to designate a trusted emergency contact. In urgent situations, the platform could then connect young users directly to someone who can provide immediate support rather than only directing them to online resources.
The move comes as regulators, parents, and safety advocates intensify scrutiny on the impact of AI tools on young people. OpenAI stated the new measures are aimed at making its chatbot safer while balancing accessibility for teenagers.
