OpenAI unveiled Dots, a high-powered AI agent built to carry out tasks for users over extended periods, at its annual Developer Day in San Francisco on Tuesday.
Dots connects to 4,000 apps through ChatGPT. Users begin with a single Dot, which they can name and customise to suit their own needs. OpenAI says it eventually expects people to run whole teams of Dots that work together on their behalf.
The agents can manage projects as they evolve, such as updating a sales proposal when a customer's needs change or building a working demo for review. They can also tap into OpenAI's Codex and ChatGPT Work tools to research topics, analyse data, prepare documents and build software. Users can communicate with their Dots through Slack and Teams.
Dots runs on GPT-6 Astra, the company's model that most closely follows human directions. CEO Sam Altman said the agent has been safety tested and described it as a new way of working with AI.
"This is the real deal version of AI that we've always imagined for ourselves,"
Altman told the event, which drew around 2,500 in-person attendees.
The launch arrives weeks after Meta debuted its popular Muse AI agent, and it aims to capitalise on growing demand for agents that can handle everyday work with little supervision.
