A recent study by Ookla®, based on Speedtest Intelligence® data, highlights that Gulf nations provide some of the fastest 5G roaming speeds globally, ensuring a superior digital experience for inbound travellers. The research assessed mobile user experiences in Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE in 2024, comparing them with visitors' home network performances.

5G Roaming in the Gulf: A Superior Experience

The study found that Qatar (381.05 Mbps), UAE (374.60 Mbps), and Kuwait (240.37 Mbps) delivered top-tier 5G download speeds for international roamers. Visitors from Austria, Saudi Arabia, and Hong Kong were most likely to use 5G roaming, while those from Pakistan, India, and Egypt were less likely to do so.

In the UAE, 37% of roaming users came from India, Saudi Arabia, Austria, Russia, and Hong Kong. Saudi and Russian travellers experienced the fastest speeds, with Russian tourists enjoying a threefold increase in median download speeds compared to their home networks. Meanwhile, visitors from Austria, India, and Hong Kong saw relatively lower speeds.

GCC’s Digital Growth Fuels Demand for 5G Roaming

With the GCC rapidly emerging as a global tourism and business hub, demand for seamless, high-speed connectivity is rising. The Travel & Tourism market in the region is projected to generate $9.57 billion by 2029, growing from $8.32 billion in 2025 at an annual rate of 3.56%.

This growth is driven by major infrastructure investments, world-class amenities, and simplified visa policies. As a result, regional mobile operators are positioning 5G roaming as a key revenue driver.

Optimizing Networks for the Future

Karim Yaici, Lead Industry Analyst for the Middle East and Africa at Ookla, emphasized the importance of 5G roaming in enhancing the travel experience by enabling seamless connectivity for navigation, social media sharing, and HD streaming. He reiterated Ookla’s commitment to improving global connectivity through neutral and independent analysis.

By leveraging Ookla’s insights, mobile service providers can optimize their networks and enhance user experiences, ensuring the Gulf region remains at the forefront of next-generation digital connectivity.
