Ramadan 2025: UAE Guidelines on Employee Work During Iftar Hours
Ad

Running a business in a Dubai free zone during Ramadan comes with specific office-related regulations that employers must follow. Here’s what you need to know about working hours, employee rights, and operational adjustments during the holy month.

Reduced Working Hours

As per Article 15(2) of Cabinet Resolution No. 1 of 2022, implementing Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021, employees are entitled to a two-hour reduction in daily working hours throughout Ramadan:

"The regular working hours shall be reduced by two hours during the holy month of Ramadan."

Any work beyond the reduced hours is considered overtime and must be compensated accordingly.

Overtime Compensation

If employees are required to work beyond the reduced Ramadan hours, they are entitled to overtime pay. Article 19(2) of the Employment Law states:

"If the work conditions necessitate that the employee works for more than the normal working hours, the excess period shall represent overtime, for which the worker shall receive a salary equal to the salary corresponding to the normal working hours, which is calculated according to the basic salary plus an increase of not less than 25 per cent of that salary."

Iftar Breaks and Operational Adjustments

  • Employers must provide an iftar break for all Muslim employees.
  • If business operations require work during iftar hours, non-Muslim employees can be scheduled during this period.
  • Consider shift rotations to maintain business continuity while ensuring compliance with Ramadan work-hour policies.

Free Zone-Specific Regulations

Since your company is based in a Dubai free zone, it is advisable to check with the respective free zone authority for any additional Ramadan-specific regulations or guidelines that may apply.

By adhering to these policies, businesses can ensure compliance while maintaining a productive and supportive work environment during Ramadan.
