Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), in partnership with Dubai Airports, has awarded a contract to widen and upgrade the bridge leading to Terminal 1 of Dubai International Airport, aiming to ease congestion and improve passenger access to the world’s busiest airport for international travelers.

The project will expand the bridge from three to four lanes through the construction of a new span using steel box girders integrated with a composite concrete slab. This method was chosen for its efficiency and ability to be completed without traffic diversions or temporary supports, ensuring uninterrupted flow on Airport Street.

Spanning 171 metres in total, with a main span of nearly 70 metres, the upgraded bridge will boost capacity by 33 percent, increasing traffic flow from 4,200 to 5,600 vehicles per hour. Enhancements will also include new street lighting, pavement upgrades, and landscaping to blend with the surrounding infrastructure.

Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the RTA, said the expansion reflects RTA’s commitment to strengthening connectivity, improving travel times, and enhancing safety while supporting Dubai’s position as a global hub.

The initiative builds on previous improvements along Airport Street, which included new bridges, tunnels, and alternative routes to improve access to Terminals 1 and 3. Together, these projects aim to accommodate the growing passenger demand at Dubai International Airport, which served more than 92 million travelers in 2024.
