Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority has awarded a major infrastructure contract to redevelop the intersections of Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street with Al Awir Road and Al Manama Street, a move set to significantly improve traffic flow and connectivity across key growth corridors in the city.

The project forms part of RTA’s wider strategy to enhance road capacity, support urban expansion, and improve quality of life as Dubai’s population continues to grow. Works include the construction of 2,300 metres of bridges, lane expansions, new service roads, and improved access points for surrounding residential and development areas.

Once completed, the upgraded corridor will see its traffic capacity increase from 5,200 vehicles per hour to 14,400 vehicles per hour in both directions, representing a 176 percent rise. Travel time is expected to drop from 20 minutes to just five minutes. Completion is scheduled for the third quarter of 2028.

Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA, said the project aligns with the authority’s master plan to develop roads, bridges, and crossings to accommodate rising traffic volumes and ensure smoother mobility across Dubai. He noted that the development will serve areas with a combined population of more than 600,000 residents and visitors.

Key elements include converting the Al Awir Road intersection into a grade separated interchange with free flowing traffic in all directions, as well as widening Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street at Al Manama Street to four lanes each way and enhancing the signalised junction.

The project builds on earlier phases that extended the corridor over 25 kilometres and introduced interim traffic solutions, which will be further upgraded as part of Dubai’s long term transport development plans.
