Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority has set a new global benchmark after its public bus fleet exceeded a cumulative operational distance of more than two million kilometres per bus, sustained over 18 years of continuous service.

The milestone highlights the emirate’s growing leadership in transport efficiency and sustainability.

The achievement reflects a long-term strategy focused on maximising asset utilisation and adopting circular economy principles. Through rigorous preventive and operational maintenance, the fleet has not only exceeded its planned lifespan but maintained high performance standards throughout.

Data shows Dubai’s buses outperform those in major global cities. Comparable fleets in London and Singapore have recorded peak distances of 1.3 million and 1.4 million kilometres respectively. In contrast, Dubai’s buses have remained operational for nearly two decades, achieving an availability rate exceeding 93 percent in 2025 while maintaining a notably low fault rate.

Officials describe the milestone as more than a numerical achievement. It represents a broader success in building a smart and sustainable transport system that integrates advanced technologies with operational discipline. The result is a reliable network that supports daily mobility while enhancing service quality.

The extended lifespan of the fleet also delivers environmental and economic benefits. By reducing the frequency of vehicle replacement, the initiative cuts manufacturing-related waste and lowers capital expenditure, aligning with Dubai’s sustainability goals.

The record reinforces Dubai’s position as a global leader in smart mobility and public transport innovation, setting a new standard for efficiency and long-term asset performance.
