Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has introduced the Automated Railway Infrastructure Inspection System (ARIIS), an artificial intelligence-powered solution designed to enhance the safety, efficiency and reliability of Dubai Metro operations.

The advanced robotic platform, equipped with sensors, lasers and 3D cameras, inspects rail tracks and infrastructure autonomously without disrupting metro services. By replacing traditional manual inspections, ARIIS cuts periodic inspection time by 75 per cent, saving nearly 1,700 working hours and reducing costs by up to 25 per cent.

The system uses real-time data analytics to support predictive maintenance, extending infrastructure lifespan and improving resource management efficiency by 40 per cent. It has also improved condition assessment capabilities by 40 per cent, accelerating maintenance and reducing emergency interventions.

Currently deployed across select metro lines, ARIIS will be expanded to the entire network following operational evaluation. The RTA is also studying the potential application of similar technologies to the tram system.

All inspections are scheduled during nightly maintenance windows and coordinated with the control centre, ensuring passenger services remain unaffected while raising safety standards across the network.
