Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has successfully completed rapid traffic enhancements on Sheikh Zayed Road, aiming to increase road capacity, reduce congestion, and improve overall traffic efficiency. The upgrades align with RTA’s strategy to implement innovative traffic solutions that keep pace with Dubai’s urban expansion while maintaining high road safety standards.
Strategic Upgrades for a Key Economic Corridor
Sheikh Zayed Road, Dubai’s primary arterial highway, is surrounded by major commercial, financial, and residential hubs, including Dubai International Financial Centre, Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall, multinational corporations, investment firms, hotels, and entertainment venues. As a critical route for business and daily commuting, ensuring its efficiency remains a top priority for RTA.
Key Enhancements and Capacity Expansion
Ahmed Al Khzaimy, Director of Traffic at RTA’s Traffic and Roads Agency, highlighted the impact of the recent improvements:
- Expansion at Financial Centre Metro Station (Abu Dhabi-bound)
- Increased lanes from three to four, expanding road capacity by 25%.
- Accommodates 3,200 vehicles per hour, up from 2,400 vehicles.
- Reduced congestion at the entrance, eliminating vehicle queues.
- Journey time cut from five minutes to just two minutes.
- Optimized Traffic Merging Between Al Khail Road and Financial Centre Street (Dubai-bound)
- Extended merging distance, easing congestion and enhancing service levels.
- 25% reduction in journey time along Sheikh Zayed Road—from four minutes to three minutes.
