Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority, in partnership with Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects, has opened a newly expanded bridge leading to Terminal 1 at Dubai International Airport, significantly boosting traffic capacity and easing access to one of the world’s busiest aviation hubs.
The upgrade increases the number of lanes from three to four, raising capacity from 4,200 to 5,600 vehicles per hour. The 33 percent increase is expected to improve traffic flow, shorten journey times, and enhance the overall experience for passengers and airport users.
The project forms part of RTA’s broader strategy to strengthen Dubai’s road network and improve connectivity between key transport corridors and critical facilities. Close coordination with Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects ensured the expansion aligns with the current and future operational needs of Dubai International Airport, supporting the sustainable growth of passenger traffic and air operations.
Construction involved the addition of a new bridge using an advanced structural system that combines steel box girders with a composite concrete deck. This approach allowed for faster construction without traffic diversions or temporary supports, ensuring uninterrupted movement on Airport Street while maintaining high safety standards.
Beyond the bridge expansion, the project included road pavement upgrades, improvements to utility infrastructure, landscaping works, and the installation of new street lighting to enhance safety and visibility.
RTA and Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects said the initiative reflects their shared commitment to developing infrastructure that supports Dubai’s aviation sector, improves quality of life, and reinforces the emirate’s global competitiveness as a leading international travel and transport hub.
