Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is considering expanding the city’s bus network and intercity services in response to the increasing demand for public transport integration.

This initiative aims to seamlessly connect buses with other transit modes, including the metro, tram, and marine transport, enhancing the overall commuting experience.

The announcement followed RTA’s recent ‘Talk to Us’ virtual session, which encouraged feedback and proposals from commuters. Discussions centered on improving internal bus routes across Dubai and enhancing intercity connectivity with other emirates. RTA highlighted,

“The session concluded with several actionable suggestions, including the potential expansion of the Dubai bus network and intercity bus service. This proposal addresses the growing demand for public bus services and the importance of integration for smoother, efficient commutes across the UAE.”

From January to June 2024, Dubai’s buses transported 89.2 million passengers, comprising 24.5% of all public transport users during this period.

Reducing Peak-Hour Traffic

The RTA's proposal to expand the bus network aligns with its broader strategy to mitigate peak-hour traffic. Earlier this month, the authority suggested implementing remote and flexible work policies to reduce traffic on Dubai's major roads by up to 30%.

Based on two studies, RTA reported that measures like a two-hour flexible start window and remote work—four to five days per month—could significantly ease morning peak congestion. Additional traffic management strategies include expanding truck movement restrictions, increasing dedicated bus and taxi lanes, and enhancing first- and last-mile connectivity to encourage public transport usage over private vehicles.

Efforts to promote carpooling and increase public transport options for employees are also key priorities, underscoring RTA's commitment to sustainable and efficient urban mobility solutions.

The proposed network expansion reflects RTA’s dedication to addressing commuter needs while fostering a more accessible and environmentally friendly transportation system.
