Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has introduced a pilot project using an AI-assisted vehicle designed for automated detection of road damage and inspection of traffic diversions.

This initiative highlights RTA’s dedication to integrating cutting-edge digital and AI technologies to enhance road quality and traffic safety in line with their vision of achieving seamless and sustainable mobility.

The advanced vehicle is equipped with high-precision tools for data collection on the condition of roadways and ensuring traffic diversions meet RTA’s technical standards. It features cameras, sensors, and technical devices that detect damage to road furniture and facilities, generate reports, and automatically upload them to the system without human intervention.

Hussain Al Banna, CEO of the Traffic and Roads Agency, stated,

“RTA is committed to improving the operational efficiency of monitoring and detecting road damage and response times. This initiative will contribute to extending the lifespan and sustainability of assets and facilities, while maintaining the urban aesthetic of Dubai. It will enhance the infrastructure and road network performance, support economic and population growth, and reinforce Dubai’s status as a safe and ideal destination for residents and visitors.”

Al Banna added that the smart vehicle offers exceptional features for detecting roadway conditions and inspecting traffic diversions. It utilizes automated technologies to identify damages and transmit data for processing and analysis using self-learning technology. This system provides up to 30% more comprehensive site coverage and reduces inspection time by at least 70% compared to traditional methods.

Reports generated by the vehicle on road damage achieve accuracy rates exceeding 85% compared to traditional methods, facilitating the verification of traffic diversions and ensuring their compliance with approved specifications for smooth and safe traffic flow.

“RTA will continue to adopt the latest digital technologies in asset inspection, evaluation, and proactive maintenance. We are committed to implementing best practices and standards in asset sustainability to ensure safe and efficient mobility for all road users in Dubai,”

concluded Al Banna.
