Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has signed an agreement with Pony.ai to begin pilot trials of autonomous vehicles in the emirate, setting the stage for the launch of a fully driverless commercial service by 2026.

The Memorandum of Understanding marks a significant step in Dubai’s push toward smart mobility. Trials are scheduled to start later this year as part of the city’s broader goal to make 25% of all trips autonomous by 2030.

Pony.ai, a leading player in autonomous driving technologies, will deploy its seventh-generation self-driving vehicles in the pilot. These vehicles, developed with global automakers including Toyota, GAC, and BAIC, use advanced AI and a network of sensors—lidars, radars, and cameras—to navigate complex urban environments.

RTA Director General Mattar Al Tayer said the partnership reinforces Dubai’s global standing in future mobility and praised Pony.ai’s decision to expand operations in the region. He noted that autonomous taxis will support public transport by improving first- and last-mile connectivity, enhancing safety, and offering greater convenience to residents and visitors.

The agreement was signed by Ahmed Hashim Bahrozyan, CEO of RTA’s Public Transport Agency, and Ann Shi, Vice President of Strategy at Pony.ai, in the presence of top officials.

Pony.ai CFO Dr. Leo Wang called the collaboration a milestone in deploying Level 4 autonomous technology across the MENA region and establishing intelligent transport standards aligned with Dubai’s vision.
