Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has launched the development of its next-generation traffic signal control system, UTC-UX Fusion, which integrates artificial intelligence (AI), predictive analytics, and digital twin technologies. The innovative system will be implemented across all major intersections in Dubai, with completion expected by mid-2026.
The project aims to enhance Dubai’s commitment to becoming a smart and sustainable city, focusing on improving road network efficiency and optimizing traffic movement. It aligns with RTA’s strategy to advance intelligent mobility solutions, reinforcing the city’s leadership in modern transportation management.
Hussain Al Banna, CEO of the Traffic and Roads Agency at RTA, highlighted the project’s potential to improve journey times by reducing congestion at intersections by 10% to 20%. The system is designed to benefit all road users, including motorists, pedestrians, cyclists, and public transport passengers, with priority given to emergency vehicles and public transport.
The UTC-UX Fusion system will feature predictive traffic analysis, dynamically adjusting signal timings to better match expected traffic flow. It also employs digital twin technology, enabling simulations of signal adjustments before implementation. The system will rely on data from future road sensors to optimize signal timings with greater precision.
Furthermore, the system supports future technologies, including Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS/V2X), which will enable communication between smart vehicles and traffic signals. This integration is expected to improve traffic fluidity, reduce journey times, and enhance overall mobility across the city, contributing to Dubai’s vision of seamless and sustainable mobility.
