Space42 and Viasat Forge Strategic Partnership for 5G Non-Terrestrial Network Development
Space42 and Viasat, Inc. have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore ecosystem partnership opportunities for developing a 5G Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) initiative.
This collaboration marks a significant step toward expanding global satellite connectivity, focusing on direct-to-device (D2D) communications, narrowband IoT (NB-IoT), and next-generation Mobile Satellite Services (MSS).
As part of the first phase, the companies will conduct partner-funded technical and commercial studies to develop a shared, multi-tenant, multi-orbit 5G NTN infrastructure using a standards-based open architecture. The envisioned infrastructure will leverage L-band, S-band, and terrestrial spectrum to enable seamless global roaming across regional networks.
The partnership also aims to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of satellite networks, aligning with evolving 5G models and global telecommunications regulations. Adhering to industry best practices outlined by the Mobile Satellite Services Association (MSSA) and 3GPP standards, the collaboration ensures interoperability with global telecom networks.
Ali Al Hashemi, CEO of Yahsat Space Services, Space42, highlighted the initiative’s transformative impact, stating that the partnership will accelerate time-to-market, enhance cost efficiency, and drive seamless network integration. Mark Dankberg, CEO and Chairman of Viasat, emphasized the agreement as a key step in advancing capital-efficient growth and fostering an open 5G-based space ecosystem.
By combining their expertise, Space42 and Viasat are poised to shape the future of global connectivity, empowering industries, governments, and communities with a future-ready, scalable satellite infrastructure.
