A recent survey conducted by Skyscanner has unveiled a fascinating trend among UAE travelers: four in five are planning trips abroad inspired by locations from their favorite video games.

The findings, detailed in the Travel Trends 2025 report, highlight a significant shift in travel preferences, with many adventurers seeking unique experiences that resonate with their interests.

Astro-tourism is gaining remarkable popularity in the UAE, particularly evident in the surge of interest in Norway's Tromso, a renowned destination for witnessing the Northern Lights. The report noted an impressive 92% year-on-year increase in searches from the UAE to Tromso, showcasing travelers' eagerness to engage with celestial phenomena.

According to the survey, over half of UAE travelers (53%) are drawn to astro-tourism for night sky photography, while 51% express a desire to sleep under the stars, and 43% aim to witness the Northern Lights firsthand. Skyscanner’s report suggests that the allure of astrology is also contributing to this trend, with 61% of respondents indicating that lunar and planetary activities, such as full moons and Mercury retrograde, can influence their travel plans and emotional well-being.

“Astro-tourism combines the adventure of exploring celestial events with the mystical insights of astrology,”

said Kellie Gerardi, an astronaut quoted in the report.

“My best advice is to plan early with flexibility. If your schedules don’t align with major celestial phenomena, there are still incredible views year-round at places like Mauna Kea in Hawaii or dark sky parks like Galloway Forest Park in Scotland.”

The study also identifies 2025 as the year of collective travel experiences, emphasizing themes such as gami-vacation, art-venture, wellness tourism, and nature-focused travel. A striking 91% of UAE travelers believe that vacations play a crucial role in building resilience and strength, helping them cope with daily stressors.

Ayoub El Mamoun, a travel expert at Skyscanner, remarked,

“We’re excited to see travelers embracing community and discovery, making every trip a memorable story of togetherness. The power of collective exploration is transforming the way we travel, whether it’s through new destinations, thrilling sporting events, or connections among fellow gamers and astro-enthusiasts.”

The report also highlights trending destinations for UAE travelers, which include Siem Reap (Cambodia), Nassau (Bahamas), Langkawi (Malaysia), Bishkek (Kyrgyzstan), and Abidjan (Ivory Coast). These locations are increasingly sought after for their unique experiences, cultural richness, adventure opportunities, and affordability.

As UAE travelers redefine their adventures in 2025, the fusion of gaming inspirations and celestial exploration marks an exciting evolution in the travel landscape.
