Dubai is proving to be a popular spot for sports events in recent times with the elite sports facilities and stadiums fitting in with the Dubai culture. Read on to find out about some of the biggest sports events happening in Dubai in 2022.
Big Sports Events to Look Forward to in the Middle East in 2022
With some of the most advanced sports facilities and stadiums in the world, it is not surprising that more and more world famous events are being held in the Middle East – and Dubai in particular.
We have already enjoyed golf’s Desert Classic and some top tennis action in Dubai this year, but there is plenty more to get excited about in the remaining months of 2022. Some of the best bonuses of staging an event in the Middle East are the futuristic arenas and service that comes with that. Here are four more global sports events scheduled to take place in Dubai and the UAE in 2022.
Dubai World Cup
The Dubai World Cup Carnival has actually already started. One of the most prestigious events in the horse racing calendar, all of the best horses, jockeys and trainers will be in Dubai to compete for some of the biggest purses in the sport. The entire purse is around $40 million – but the Dubai Cup is the grand finale.
Taking place on Saturday 26 March, all races on the day will be run for at least $1 million, with the total prize money for the Dubai World Cup itself set at a staggering $30.5 million. Expect high drama and high fashion as horse racing’s grand occasion attracts a sense of extravagance.
DP World Tour Championship
If you somehow missed the Desert Classic at the beginning of the year, the good news is that there is a lot of top class golf in Dubai and the Middle East scheduled for the rest of 2022. The DP World Tour Championship is one of the highlights and will take place in November.
This tournament is on the European Tour and promises a minimum of $2 million prize fund for the players involved. All the action will be at the Earth course at the Jumeirah Golf Estates in Dubai with everyone looking to emulate American Colin Morikawa who took the title last year.
Dubai Rugby Sevens
The 2022 rugby sevens season actually kicked off in Dubai at the end of last year. But the whole experience rolls back around in December to finish off the campaign in a glorious carnival of food, fashion, entertainment – and, of course, rugby. It is one of the longest running sports events in the Middle East and regularly attracts thousands of spectators each year.
There are four separate competitions every year, for both men and women, with the World Series becoming one of the most important in the world. All the action takes place at The Sevens Stadium, a purpose-built arena that has seen some of the very best rugby players in the world showing their explosive power to enthralled crowds.
NBA Abu Dhabi Games
This one is still somewhat in the TBD stage. But the exciting news is that there will definitely be some NBA events in Abu Dhabi this year. The dates haven’t quite been finalized at the moment but there will be two pre-season games for basketball fans to enjoy. That means that NBA hoops will be in Abu Dhabi in October.
There will be a whole host of events for adults and children to enjoy – including some NBA junior leagues and other interactive activities. The teams and venue are still to be decided but this is an exciting chance for locals and visitors to catch some of the best ballers on the planet.
