The Nine-Hour AI Course Every Professional Should Take

The Nine-Hour AI Course Every Professional Should Take

Dubai has spent the past two years telling every industry to get serious about AI. Government departments have rolled out AI strategies, free zones are chasing AI-focused businesses, and job listings across the city increasingly expect at least a working understanding of how these systems should be used responsibly. What most professionals still lack is somewhere to actually learn that, without enrolling in a technical degree or wading through dense policy documents.

That gap just got a bit smaller. Coursera has welcomed UNESCO onto its platform for the first time, launching UNESCO's inaugural free course on the site: the Global MOOC on the Ethics of AI, built in partnership with LG AI Research. For anyone in Dubai trying to show their organisation is thinking seriously about AI governance, this is worth a look.

The course draws on UNESCO's Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence, the first global framework of its kind and one endorsed by 193 countries. Rather than restating those principles in the abstract, the programme is built to help learners actually apply them, walking through how to spot ethical risks, weigh competing priorities and make sound calls on how AI gets designed, deployed and governed.

Prof Khaled El-Enany, UNESCO's Director General, put it plainly: principles alone don't create ethical AI, people do. He described the course as a way of turning the organisation's recommendation into practical learning that people can apply across the entire AI lifecycle rather than treating it as a set of commitments on paper.

Dr Lim Woo-hyung of LG AI Research made a similar point, noting that while there's now broad international agreement on what ethical AI should look like, the harder task is carrying that thinking through actual product development and service operation. The hope, he said, is that the course gives working developers and researchers a practical foundation for building trustworthy AI, so responsible practice becomes standard rather than aspirational.

The content itself covers privacy, transparency, sustainability and human autonomy, translated into hands on projects rather than theory alone, with input from experts at Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Toronto and the Alan Turing Institute among others. It runs for nine hours, needs no technical background and is available in 11 languages, which makes it accessible whether you're a policymaker, a researcher, a university student or a business leader trying to keep your team ahead of the curve.

Marni Baker Stein, Coursera's Chief Content Officer, framed the launch as expanding global access to education on what she called one of the most pressing issues of the moment.

For Dubai's business community, where AI adoption is moving faster than most people's understanding of its risks, a free and genuinely practical course like this is a low effort way to close that gap. It's available now on Coursera at no cost, and given how much weight AI governance is starting to carry in hiring, procurement and compliance conversations across the city, it's the kind of nine hours that could pay off well beyond the certificate.
