UAE Achieves Historic Scientific Breakthrough in Antarctica

The United Arab Emirates has welcomed home members of its first joint scientific expedition to Antarctica, carried out in collaboration with the Bulgarian Antarctic Research Institute.

This milestone underscores the UAE’s commitment to advancing global scientific research and strengthening international cooperation in meteorology and climate science.

The expedition included two UAE experts specializing in meteorology and seismic monitoring, who installed two advanced weather and seismic monitoring stations. These installations will significantly improve numerical models for weather forecasts and seismic activity tracking, enhancing global understanding of environmental conditions in Antarctica.

Mariam bint Mohammed Almheiri, Chair of the Emirates Polar Programme and the International Affairs Office at the Presidential Court, praised the mission’s success.

“This joint expedition highlights the power of international collaboration in climate science. Through the Emirates Polar Programme, we remain dedicated to science diplomacy and fostering partnerships with global research communities.”

The scientists underwent rigorous medical and physical training to prepare for Antarctica’s extreme conditions. Despite harsh winds and freezing temperatures, the team conducted critical research on climate change, ice melting, and atmospheric phenomena. The mission was also documented using virtual reality technology, offering an interactive experience that showcases the challenges faced and discoveries made.

Dr. Abdullah Al Mandous, Director-General of the National Center of Meteorology and President of the World Meteorological Organisation, hailed the mission as a significant step forward.

“Our collaboration with the Bulgarian Antarctic Research Institute reflects our dedication to international scientific cooperation. The data collected will enhance weather forecasting and our ability to tackle climate change.”

This ambitious research initiative reinforces the UAE’s leadership in global climate efforts and its commitment to science-driven solutions for a sustainable future.
