Bayanat, a leading AI-powered geospatial solutions provider and a subsidiary of G42, has marked a significant milestone in the UAE's space sector by launching "Foresight-1," its first Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite.
This achievement underscores the UAE's rising prominence on the global space stage and forms a cornerstone of the UAE's Earth Observation Space Programme.
Hasan Al Hosani, Managing Director of Bayanat, revealed that the launch places the UAE among the elite group of 20 countries globally operating SAR space assets. This advancement solidifies the UAE's position in space and enhances its capabilities in the field.
The strategic roadmap, crafted by Bayanat in collaboration with Al Yah Satellite Communications Company (Yahsat), involves deploying a constellation of SAR-equipped satellites in the near future. The launch of Foresight-1 represents the initial phase of this ambitious Earth Observation System plan announced in 2023.
Foresight-1 is designed to deliver continuous, high-resolution monitoring regardless of time, weather conditions, or sunlight, thanks to its SAR technology. This active sensing system provides detailed images by measuring reflected signals from the Earth's surface, surpassing traditional optical imaging satellites in versatility.
The technology promises to enhance Bayanat and Yahsat’s geospatial solutions, improve disaster management, marine monitoring, and smart mobility applications. Emirati nationals constitute over 30% of the Earth Observation Space Programme, reflecting a strong commitment to developing local talent in this critical sector.
The anticipated merger between Bayanat and Yahsat, set to conclude by the end of the year pending regulatory approvals, will give rise to "Space42." This new entity aims to become a leading Emirati space firm with a global reach, aligning with the National Space Strategy 2030 to bolster national security, innovation, international collaboration, economic growth, and urban development through space technology.
