The United Arab Emirates and Argentina have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen cooperation in Antarctic research, marking a significant step towards advancing global polar science and environmental stewardship.
The agreement was formalized between the Emirates Polar Program, operating under the UAE Presidential Court, and the National Directorate for Antarctic (Instituto Antártico Argentino - IAA), under Argentina’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Trade, and Worship.
The signing took place during the visit of Argentina’s Foreign Minister to the UAE, with Abdulla Balalaa, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Energy and Sustainability, and Vice-Chair of the Emirates Polar Program Steering Committee, representing the UAE.
The collaboration aims to facilitate joint research projects, academic exchanges, and capacity-building initiatives, furthering both nations’ contributions to the study of Antarctica. Balalaa highlighted the significance of the agreement, stating,
“This MoU reflects the UAE’s unwavering commitment to advancing polar science through strategic global partnerships.”
The Emirates Polar Program, dedicated to enhancing the UAE’s role in polar science, will benefit from Argentina’s extensive experience in Antarctic research. This partnership follows previous MoUs with the Arctic University of Norway and India’s National Center for Polar and Ocean Research, reinforcing the UAE’s commitment to international scientific cooperation.
Beyond research advancements, the MoU also strengthens diplomatic ties between the two nations, reflecting a shared vision for sustainable scientific progress in Antarctica’s critical ecosystem.
