The United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) have announced a strategic partnership to support 20 developing nations in enhancing their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
The initiative, revealed during the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, aims to elevate global climate ambitions and drive urgent climate action.
Leveraging the UAE’s renewable energy leadership and IRENA’s expertise in NDC development, the partnership will provide technical and financial assistance to developing economies, helping them establish more ambitious national climate and energy plans. The collaboration aligns with the NDC Partnership and emphasizes the importance of renewable energy in achieving the Paris Agreement goals.
The UAE’s Minister of Climate Change and Environment, Dr. Amna Al Dahak Al Shamsi, emphasized the urgency of bridging the gap between current NDC ambitions and the targets needed to limit global warming to 1.5°C.
“This partnership marks a crucial step toward supporting developing countries in accelerating their energy transitions,”
she stated.
Francesco La Camera, IRENA’s Director-General, highlighted the importance of renewables in cutting carbon emissions and praised the UAE’s continued leadership in the energy transition. The partnership aims to empower vulnerable nations by providing policy certainty and encouraging private sector engagement for a just energy transition.
With the first Global Stocktake at COP28 underscoring the need to triple renewable energy capacity by 2030, the UAE-IRENA partnership is seen as a vital effort to help developing countries meet global climate targets.
