Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and Special Envoy to Japan, concluded a four-day working visit to Japan on April 16, 2025, aimed at reinforcing bilateral relations and advancing key strategic partnerships.

Leading the UAE delegation at the second ministerial meeting of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, Dr. Al Jaber met with senior Japanese officials, including Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya, Economy and Trade Minister Yuki Moto, and Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi. Talks focused on expanding cooperation in trade, investment, energy, advanced technology, and sustainable development.

The two sides reviewed ongoing initiatives and discussed new opportunities in clean energy, industry, and innovation. Outcomes from working groups were presented across priority sectors including energy, where notable progress was announced.

During the visit, ADNOC signed a 15-year Sales and Purchase Agreement with Mitsui & Co. to supply up to 0.6 million tonnes per annum of LNG from its lower-carbon Ruwais project. Additionally, Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry welcomed the first certified low-carbon ammonia shipment from Fertiglobe and ADNOC, to be used in a fully ammonia-powered turbine for clean electricity generation.

Dr. Al Jaber also engaged with executives from Japan Bank for International Cooperation, INPEX, JERA, Mitsubishi, and Mitsui to strengthen private-sector collaboration.

The UAE-Japan trade relationship remains robust, with total trade reaching $49.6 billion in 2024. Non-oil trade grew by 1.2% to $17.5 billion. The UAE continues to be Japan’s top GCC trading partner, receiving 52% of Japanese exports to the region, while Japan ranks as the UAE’s ninth-largest global trade partner.
