The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) has partnered with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in a significant humanitarian initiative, committing $7 million to support critical efforts in Sudan and South Sudan.
This agreement allocates $6 million for UNICEF's operations in Sudan and $1 million for South Sudan, further underscoring the UAE's dedication to addressing the severe humanitarian crises in these regions.
The conflict in Sudan has intensified, creating a dire situation where approximately 13.6 million children urgently need aid. Over six million people, more than half of whom are children, have been displaced, making Sudan the epicenter of the world’s largest child displacement crisis.
The UAE's contribution will directly support UNICEF’s efforts to provide primary health care, clean water, and educational opportunities in both countries.
Reem bint Ebrahim Al Hashimy, Minister of State for International Cooperation, emphasized the UAE's commitment to supporting the most vulnerable populations affected by the conflict. She noted,
"Through this agreement with UNICEF, we reinforce our dedication to providing life-saving assistance and ensuring that children receive essential services. The UAE will continue to support the Sudanese people and collaborate with international partners to address urgent humanitarian needs."
The UAE has previously provided over $3.5 billion in aid to Sudan over the past decade. Since the 2023 outbreak of conflict, the country has contributed $230 million in humanitarian aid, dispatched 159 relief flights, and built two field hospitals in Chad, treating over 45,000 people.
Additionally, the UAE calls for an immediate ceasefire and stresses the need for dialogue to resolve the conflict. The UAE remains committed to engaging with stakeholders and supporting processes aimed at achieving a peaceful resolution and national consensus in Sudan.
