UAE Becomes World First to Use AI-Powered Drones for Crescent Moon Sighting
The UAE Council for Fatwa is set to make history by deploying AI-powered drones to sight the crescent moon marking the beginning of the Holy Month of Ramadan.
This groundbreaking initiative positions the UAE at the forefront of technological innovation in religious observances.
In a statement, the Council highlighted that the AI-powered drones will extend the traditional method of visual moon sighting, aligning with the Prophet Muhammad’s (peace be upon him) guidance:
“Do not fast unless you see the crescent (of Ramadan), and do not give up fasting till you see the crescent (of Shawwal).”
The new approach will act as a complement to both direct visual observation and data from advanced astronomical observatories across the country.
The initiative, a world first, is being carried out in collaboration with national institutions, specialised research centres, and observatories. Equipped with cutting-edge technology, the drones are expected to enhance the accuracy and reliability of moon sighting, particularly in cases where weather conditions obstruct direct observation.
By combining AI technology with traditional practices, the UAE aims to uphold the sanctity of the crescent moon sighting while embracing technological advancements that promote precision and consistency in religious observances.
