The bilateral relations between the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the People's Republic of China have entered a golden era, characterized by an expanded and distinguished strategic partnership under the guidance of their visionary leaders.

This strong friendship, rooted in cultural, economic, and historical ties, began with the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1984.

Since then, both nations have significantly deepened their partnership, signing over 148 bilateral agreements across various sectors. Historic milestones include the visit of UAE’s Founding Father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, to China in 1990 and the reciprocal visit by former Chinese President Yang Shangkun to the UAE in 1989. The relationship was further strengthened by visits from Chinese President Xi Jinping in 2018 and UAE President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan in 2019.

Economic collaboration has flourished, with UAE’s non-oil trade with China reaching AED296 billion (US$81 billion) in 2023, marking a 4.2 percent increase from the previous year. China remains the UAE’s top non-oil trading partner, contributing significantly to the UAE’s imports and re-exports.

Investment ties are also robust, with UAE investments in China totaling US$11.9 billion from 2003 to 2023, while Chinese investments in the UAE reached US$7.7 billion. Key investment areas include telecommunications, renewable energy, and transport.

Tourism plays a crucial role in their economic interaction, with over one million Chinese tourists visiting the UAE in the first ten months of 2023. The UAE is also a key partner in China’s Belt and Road Initiative, committing US$10 billion to a joint investment fund.

Cultural relations continue to thrive, with growing exchanges in education and cultural activities. The Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan Centre for Arabic Language and Islamic Studies in Beijing and the introduction of Chinese language programs in UAE schools reflect the deepening cultural ties between the two nations.
