The UAE has introduced artificial intelligence-powered drones into its Ramadan crescent sighting process, marking a significant step in blending advanced technology with traditional Islamic practice to ensure the highest levels of accuracy and reliability.
The Ramadan Crescent Sighting Committee for 1447 AH, operating under the UAE Council For Fatwa, used drones equipped with advanced scientific features to analyse images captured from observatories across the country. The initiative reflects a growing emphasis on precision, transparency, and scientific integration in determining the start of the holy month.
Speaking to the Emirates News Agency, Dr. Omar Habtoor Al Darei, Chairman of the General Authority of Islamic Affairs, Endowments and Zakat, said the approach aligns with the Committee’s commitment to combining established Shariah principles with modern technological tools.
He noted that the methodology remains rooted in the Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) guidance,
“Fast upon sighting it and break your fast upon sighting it,”
while benefiting from contemporary scientific advancements that strengthen the accuracy of observations.
According to Dr. Al Darei, the Committee coordinated closely with specialists and astronomers and relied on data from six observatories located across the UAE. This collaborative framework underscores the country’s dedication to a transparent and robust crescent sighting process.
The use of AI-enabled drones represents another milestone in the UAE’s broader strategy to integrate innovation into religious and public services, reinforcing trust in official determinations related to key Islamic occasions.
