According to Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), in cases where learners commit traffic violations, the driving institute overseeing their training incurs the penalty. This rule aims to ensure accountability and underscores the crucial role of driving instructors in guiding and monitoring learners effectively.

Wajahat Noor, Manager of the Instructor Training Centre at Emirates Driving Institute (EDI), emphasized the instructor's pivotal role in ensuring road safety. He highlighted that instructors bear responsibility not only for the learner’s safety but also for the proper use of training vehicles equipped with safety features and dual controls.

"Instructors must remain vigilant and prepared to handle various challenging situations on the road,"

Noor stated.

Moreover, Noor stressed the importance of effective communication and immediate feedback to help learners develop their driving skills responsibly. He underscored the need for patience and thorough understanding of traffic rules during instruction sessions.

In response to the incident, road safety specialist Thomas Edelmann of RoadSafetyUAE emphasized the broader implications for novice drivers. Citing recent statistics revealing that 15% of major accidents involved new license holders, Edelmann called for enhanced awareness campaigns and a review of driving school curricula. He advocated for early education on road safety, starting from schools and extending to all levels of driver training.

Constant safety reminders

RoadSafetyUAE also shared the following safety reminders for all motorists:

  • Wear seat belts all the time
  • Obey speed limits
  • Keep proper distance between cars
  • Always use the indicator
  • Avoid banned substances
  • Focus on the road and don’t get distracted by passengers and mobile phones
  • Avoid driving with (young) passengers, until you feel safe and have gained experience to take responsibility for the lives of others
  • Share safe driving tips and tricks
