The UAE Government has issued a Federal Decree-Law establishing the National Media Authority as a federal public entity affiliated with the UAE Cabinet, marking a significant step toward consolidating the country’s media governance and national messaging.
Under the new legislation, the Authority will replace the UAE Media Council, the National Media Office, and the Emirates News Agency, assuming all their functions, rights, obligations, and related legislative frameworks. Existing contracts, agreements, and memoranda of understanding will also fall under its remit.
The National Media Authority is tasked with aligning media policies and efforts across federal and local entities, unifying the UAE’s media discourse domestically and internationally, and proposing the country’s strategic media tone and messaging. It will play a central role in organising and advancing the national media sector while enhancing the UAE’s global reputation.

The Decree-Law grants the Authority responsibility for developing media-related legislation, policies, and standards, including the licensing and regulation of all media outlets and activities. This mandate extends to digital media, publishing, and entities operating within free zones.
The Authority will oversee media content produced or circulated in the UAE, establish content standards in coordination with relevant bodies, and manage the national media narrative. It will also develop mechanisms to respond swiftly to media crises, counter misinformation, and address digital media threats.
Additionally, the Authority will develop WAM as the official channel for publishing and distributing approved news, build a global network of correspondents, license foreign media representatives, and train national media talent. Governance provisions include a board of trustees, senior executive appointments, and Cabinet-approved commercial activities.
