As the UAE enters the peak of summer, with temperatures soaring above 50°C, medical experts are urging residents to prioritize their health and safety amid challenging weather conditions.

The Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) has issued a warning about the likelihood of dust storms throughout the season, emphasizing the associated health risks for the community.

Dust storms are prevalent during the summer months and can carry harmful pollutants and irritants, posing significant risks, especially for those exposed to them regularly. In light of this, MoHAP has provided several crucial recommendations to help residents protect themselves against the adverse effects of dust and extreme heat.

Key Recommendations from MoHAP:

  1. Limit Outdoor Activities: Residents are encouraged to minimize unnecessary outings. Prolonged exposure to dust storms can lead to respiratory issues and other health problems.
  2. Wear Masks: When venturing outside, it is advisable to wear protective masks, with the N95 mask being the preferred choice. Health experts warn that dust storms can trigger allergies, causing symptoms such as itchy throats, irritated eyes, and persistent coughing.
  3. Use Sunglasses: To shield the eyes from harmful UV rays, especially for those working outdoors, wearing sunglasses is essential. Prolonged UV exposure can lead to serious eye conditions, including cataracts and age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
  4. Follow Medication Schedules: Individuals with pre-existing conditions must adhere strictly to their prescribed medication regimens, as dusty conditions can exacerbate their health issues.
  5. Carry Emergency Inhalers: Those at higher risk, including asthma patients, the elderly, children, and individuals with autoimmune or respiratory diseases, should always carry emergency inhalers when going outside.
  6. Stay Hydrated: Maintaining hydration is crucial to prevent dehydration, which can result in fatigue, dizziness, and heatstroke. Residents are advised to drink water regularly.
  7. Check Weather Conditions: Staying informed about the weather is vital. Residents should regularly check updates to prepare accordingly, knowing which essentials to carry and what activities to avoid based on current conditions.

As the UAE braces for peak summer conditions, following these guidelines is essential to safeguard health and well-being. By taking proactive measures, residents can better navigate the challenges posed by the season and protect themselves from its potential health risks.
