The UAE and Germany reaffirmed their commitment to deeper energy and climate cooperation as officials and experts gathered for the UAE Germany Energy Forum, held under the Emirati German Energy and Climate Partnership.
The forum coincided with the visit of Katherina Reiche, Germany’s Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy, and brought together specialists from both countries to discuss the future of energy grids and the growing role of artificial intelligence in energy systems.
Eng Sharif Al Olama, Undersecretary for Energy and Petroleum Affairs at the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, said the partnership between the two nations is rooted in a shared focus on clean energy, innovation, and climate action. He noted that collaboration has expanded significantly since the Energy Partnership was established in 2017 and extended to climate cooperation in 2022.
Discussions centered on two key themes shaping the next decade. The first focused on the transformation of energy grids, with expectations that Europe and the Gulf will become increasingly connected through clean power, hydrogen, and digital infrastructure. Al Olama stressed that modern and resilient grids are essential to meeting global goals to triple renewable energy capacity and double energy efficiency by 2030.
The second theme explored the impact of AI and innovation on energy systems, particularly the rising demands of AI driven data centers on power, cooling, and system flexibility. He highlighted the UAE’s progress in solar energy, district cooling, hydrogen deployment, and advanced battery storage as examples of its proactive approach.
Al Olama added that both countries are committed to advancing cooperation across hydrogen and SAF supply chains, energy storage, carbon markets, industrial decarbonisation, and digital energy systems, with a continued focus on enabling start ups and private sector partners.
