UAE Highlights Green Construction and Climate Resilience Efforts at COP29
At the 29th UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan, Sheikh Naser Al Qassimi, Assistant Under-Secretary for the Infrastructure and Transport Sector at the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure (MoEI), outlined the UAE’s robust initiatives to decarbonise the building sector and enhance climate resilience in cities.
Speaking at a High-Level Roundtable on Green Construction and Energy Efficiency, Sheikh Al Qassimi underscored the nation's comprehensive approach to sustainability.
He highlighted the UAE’s Green Home Loans programme, which facilitates accessible sustainable housing and empowers citizens to contribute to the green transformation. Furthermore, the UAE has developed stringent sustainability guidelines for infrastructure projects, ensuring energy and water efficiency, waste reduction, and the integration of sustainable materials across roads, buildings, and housing projects.
“The UAE’s proactive approach is informed by scientific research, such as studies on sea level rise conducted in collaboration with NYU Abu Dhabi,”
he noted. These studies emphasize the risks to mangroves, coral reefs, and urban infrastructure, driving resilient coastal and urban planning. The UAE National Guide for Smart Construction also ensures new projects leverage digital and smart technologies to achieve environmental goals.
Innovative initiatives like the 3D Digital Twin project exemplify the UAE’s use of cutting-edge technology to enhance urban planning and sustainability. Sheikh Al Qassimi also emphasized the National Demand Side Management Programme, aiming to cut energy usage by 51% and water consumption by 40% by 2050. This includes solar energy expansion, retrofitting government buildings, and implementing energy efficiency standards.
On a regional scale, the UAE leads the Arab Roadmap for Zero-Emission Buildings, reflecting a shared commitment to the Paris Agreement and Sustainable Development Goals. Sheikh Al Qassimi affirmed,
“Innovation in construction and infrastructure is pivotal in our fight against climate change.”
