Abdullah bin Touq Al Marri, UAE's Minister of Economy, is leading the nation's delegation at the 65th session of the Assemblies of the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) in Geneva.

The session, ongoing until 17th July, underscores the UAE's commitment to enhancing its intellectual property (IP) sector.

Highlighting the UAE’s strides in IP development, Bin Touq emphasized the nation's alignment with global best practices, viewing IP as crucial for economic growth. His address showcased the UAE's robust legislative framework, including the Trademark Law, Copyright and Neighboring Rights Law, and Industrial Property Rights Regulation, all designed to protect creators and stimulate innovation.

Bin Touq stressed ongoing efforts to foster an innovative business environment through initiatives and projects, enhancing the UAE's status as a hub for creativity. He noted the implementation of a new IP system with 11 initiatives aimed at supporting inventors and entrepreneurs.

Marking the UAE's 50th anniversary with WIPO, Bin Touq reaffirmed the nation's dedication to IP rights protection and proposed hosting a WIPO external office in Abu Dhabi. He also supported integrating Arabic into the Madrid System for International Registration of Trademarks.

The Minister announced that Daren Tang, WIPO Director-General, will attend the World Government Summit in February 2025 to discuss future IP sector opportunities.

Additionally, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed with the Japan Patent Office, enhancing cooperation on patents, utility certificates, and industrial designs. This MoU aligns with the 'We the UAE 2031' vision, aiming to combat IP infringements and enhance national expertise.

The UAE's IP sector has seen significant growth, with a notable increase in trademark registrations and intellectual works. The first half of 2024 recorded 15,319 trademarks, up by 3.4%, and a 22% rise in intellectual works registrations. Patent applications also grew by 2.8%, reflecting the UAE's thriving IP landscape.

Through international cooperation and innovative legislation, the UAE continues to fortify its position as a global leader in IP rights protection and innovation.
