The UAE Nuclear Non-Proliferation Forum, hosted by the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR), commenced in Dubai, bringing together over 80 national and international experts. The three-day event, themed “Harnessing Innovation in Nuclear Non-Proliferation,” aims to address pressing global issues in nuclear safeguards and import-export control systems.

The forum serves as a platform for knowledge exchange, featuring discussions on global nuclear non-proliferation policies, export control regimes, and national case studies. It also explores the role of innovative technologies like artificial intelligence in enhancing nuclear safeguards, enforcement mechanisms, and capacity-building initiatives. Participants will share methodologies, best practices, and cooperation strategies to strengthen the global nuclear non-proliferation system.

FANR Director-General Christer Viktorsson highlighted the significance of the forum in addressing global challenges and ensuring the peaceful use of nuclear materials. He emphasized the UAE's commitment to nuclear non-proliferation and its exemplary nuclear policy, which has garnered international acclaim. Viktorsson noted that the UAE’s Nuclear Energy Programme is guided by principles of transparency, safety, security, and sustainability, aligning with international conventions.

The UAE is regarded as a global role model for nuclear newcomers. It is the first country in three decades to simultaneously construct four reactors at the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant and the first Arab nation to operate a nuclear power plant. The UAE's approach to nuclear energy is built on six core principles, including operational transparency and adherence to the highest non-proliferation standards.

In 2023, the UAE reinforced its commitment to global nuclear safeguards by signing an Administrative Arrangement with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). This agreement includes the UAE's Safeguards Support Programme, designed to enhance the effectiveness of IAEA safeguards. IAEA Director-General Rafael Mariano Grossi commended the UAE for its proactive role in bolstering the international nuclear non-proliferation regime.

The forum underscores the UAE’s leadership in advancing nuclear non-proliferation efforts, providing a vital platform for dialogue and collaboration to ensure nuclear materials are used solely for peaceful purposes. By fostering international cooperation and embracing innovation, the UAE continues to set benchmarks in nuclear safety and security on the global stage.
