A new feature film inspired by the UAE’s space achievements is set to begin production, highlighting the nation’s commitment to innovation and female empowerment.
The Desert Beyond is a female-led drama that tells the story of Maryam, a young Emirati engineer vying to become the Arab world’s first female astronaut.
Oscar-nominated and Emmy-winning filmmaker David Darg will direct the 90-minute film, which will be shot in Dubai and across the UAE with support from the Dubai Films and Games Commission. The project blends emotional drama with an aspirational space narrative, exploring Maryam’s journey through a demanding astronaut selection process while confronting personal doubt and family expectations.
The film is executive produced by Rasha Khalifa Al Mubarak of Naiy Production House, with Carla DiBello of Arabia Plus and award-winning producer Stephen Strachan joining as producers. The production aims to showcase Emirati talent and bring a female-driven story from the Arab world to global audiences.
Her Excellency Nehal Badri, Secretary General of the Dubai Media Council, emphasized the project’s significance in promoting Dubai as a hub for media innovation and advancing women’s roles across industries.
“Our support reaffirms our dedication to enabling the film industry to share stories about the UAE’s pioneering spirit,”
she said.
The story draws inspiration from the UAE Space Agency’s milestones, including the Emirates Mars Mission, astronaut missions to the International Space Station, and the achievements of Nora Al Matrooshi, the first Emirati female astronaut.
Casting for The Desert Beyond is set to begin soon. Capstone Pictures will handle worldwide sales, while Front Row Filmed Entertainment will manage distribution in the Middle East and North Africa. The film is planned for theatrical release followed by international streaming.
