The UAE has become the first in the Middle East to introduce the Direct Anterior “Bikini” incision total hip replacement using robotic technology.
Dr. Ali Al Baloushi, President of the Emirates Orthopedic Society and Head of Orthocure Medical Center, announced this groundbreaking advancement, emphasizing its potential to revolutionize hip replacement procedures.
Developed by Australian consultant orthopedic hip surgeon Dr. Ikram Nizam, the Bikini hip replacement approach is a minimally invasive technique that has shown remarkable success in specialized European centers. The procedure offers several benefits, including a smaller, aesthetically pleasing scar, reduced post-operative pain, minimal blood loss, early mobility, and a quicker return to daily activities. Patients can begin walking within hours and resume driving within weeks.
This advanced surgical technique is suitable for most individuals requiring hip replacement, particularly those with degenerative arthritis or inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis. However, it may not be ideal for severely obese or highly muscular patients, as well as those with severe congenital hip dislocation. In such cases, a modified robotic-assisted approach can still improve outcomes.
Dr. Nizam highlighted that while traditional hip replacement remains necessary for complex cases, robotic assistance enhances precision, leading to faster recovery and greater patient satisfaction. The introduction of this innovative procedure marks a significant step forward in orthopedic surgery in the region.
