The Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) has unveiled a groundbreaking framework to measure health research and development (R&D) expenditures within the UAE's health sector.
The initiative, introduced at a ceremony in Dubai, aims to enhance transparency, efficiency, and evidence-based decision-making, contributing to improved planning and performance.
Dr. Amin Hussain Al Amiri, Assistant Undersecretary of the Health Regulations Sector, led the event alongside key officials from the Department of Health-Abu Dhabi, Dubai Health Authority, UAE University, and other national institutions. The framework, designed by the National Centre for Health Research, sets clear definitions and principles for tracking R&D spending, following UNESCO and OECD guidelines.
This initiative will support collaboration across health, academic, and private sectors, allowing for accurate tracking of R&D expenditures. By aligning with global standards, it aims to boost the UAE’s competitiveness, enhance healthcare quality, and contribute to its status as a hub for innovation. The framework will also help stakeholders, including healthcare institutions and private companies, measure R&D investments systematically.
Dr. Al Amiri emphasized that the new framework reflects the UAE's commitment to strengthening health research and innovation.
“Investing in health research is investing in the future of the UAE community,"
he stated. The UAE’s progress in health research funding, which has grown three times faster than the global average, aligns with the nation’s long-term vision, aiming to solidify its position as a global leader in healthcare innovation by 2031 and beyond.
This strategic move is part of the broader efforts to foster a dynamic and competitive health research ecosystem in the UAE.
