UAE Launches Global Sustainable Aviation Marketplace at 4th ICAO Symposium

Abu Dhabi welcomed over 1,500 participants today as the 4th ICAO Global Implementation Support Symposium 2025 commenced, alongside the inaugural "Global Sustainable Aviation Marketplace."

Held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the three-day event, running from February 10-12, brings together more than 35 air transport ministers and civil aviation directors from 193 countries.

Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri, UAE Minister of Economy and Chairman of the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), inaugurated the event, underscoring the nation's commitment to sustainable aviation. He emphasized the UAE's focus on integrating artificial intelligence into air traffic management and reducing carbon emissions to foster a smarter and safer aviation industry.

ICAO President Salvatore Sciacchitano lauded the UAE for its leadership in advancing sustainability initiatives. He highlighted ICAO’s commitment to supporting global aviation, referencing the $25 million allocated for capacity building and the incorporation of "leaving no country behind" into the 2026-2050 strategic framework.

A key highlight was the signing of a cooperation agreement between the UAE GCAA and ICAO for the "Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Aviation Award." With a funding of $1 million, the award aims to propel scientific research in alternative fuel production, reinforcing sustainability efforts in aviation.

Additionally, five major international commitments were announced, including agreements with Mauritania, Yemen, Japan, Kazakhstan, and Trinidad and Tobago to enhance aviation master planning and resource mobilization.

The first day concluded with a ministerial session addressing aviation's role in economic growth, sustainability challenges, and implementation support for resource-limited states. The symposium continues to shape global discussions on sustainable aviation, reinforcing international collaboration for a greener future.
