In a landmark initiative aimed at fostering economic and social development, The Digital School, an initiative under Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives (MBRGI), in collaboration with ATAYA Initiative of the Emirates Red Crescent (ERC), launched the 'Skills Academies' at the World Governments Summit 2025 in Dubai.
During the event, The Digital School signed cooperation agreements with four African nations—Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, Seychelles, and Eswatini—to expand access to digital education in underserved communities. The initiative seeks to empower 5 million African youth through eight specialized academies offering vocational training aligned with job market demands.
The launch was attended by Sheikh Shakhbout bin Nahyan Al Nahyan, Minister of State; Omar Sultan Al Olama, UAE Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence and Chairman of The Digital School; and Dr. Hamdan Musallam Al Mazrouei, Chairman of the Emirates Red Crescent, alongside African ministers and education experts.
Sheikh Shakhbout emphasized the initiative’s role in sustainable development, stating,
“Building skills is key to inclusive progress. This initiative reflects the UAE’s commitment to investing in people and empowering youth.”
Omar Sultan Al Olama highlighted the importance of digital transformation in bridging educational gaps, noting,
“The Digital School is a model for enabling communities through digital education, equipping youth with future-ready skills, and driving economic and social development.”
With Africa projected to have the world’s fastest-growing workforce by 2050, the initiative addresses the increasing demand for practical skills. According to the World Bank, Sub-Saharan Africa will require 230 million digital jobs by 2030, necessitating medium to advanced digital skills.
Through this initiative, the UAE continues to champion innovative and sustainable education solutions, ensuring a brighter future for millions across Africa.
