The UAE has unveiled a US$1 billion initiative to accelerate artificial intelligence projects across Africa, marking a major push to support digital transformation and sustainable development throughout the continent.

Announced by H.H. Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, during the G20 summit, the AI for Development initiative aims to strengthen economic and social progress by expanding digital infrastructure, improving government services and boosting productivity in key sectors.

The programme will be carried out by the Abu Dhabi Exports Office in partnership with the UAE Foreign Aid Agency. Together, the entities will guide financing and technical support for AI projects designed to address development gaps in education, agriculture and infrastructure.

Officials said the initiative reflects the UAE’s commitment to helping emerging economies adopt advanced technologies that can accelerate long-term growth. It also reinforces the country’s broader vision of building a knowledge-based economy and enhancing its role as a global centre for AI innovation.

Mohamed Saif Al Suwaidi, Director-General of the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, said the initiative combines technology, financing and international partnerships to help developing countries strengthen economic resilience. He added that empowering UAE enterprises to deliver high-impact AI projects in Africa will deepen cooperation and support global development goals.

Dr Tareq Ahmed Al Ameri, Chairman of the UAE Foreign Aid Agency, noted that many African nations require transformative tools to improve education, healthcare and infrastructure. He said the initiative reflects the UAE’s long-standing commitment to humanitarian and development efforts worldwide.

The AI for Development initiative forms part of the UAE’s wider foreign assistance to Africa. Since 1971, the UAE has provided more than AED152 billion in aid to countries across the continent, reaffirming its role as a key contributor to global development.
