The United Arab Emirates emerged as Japan’s largest crude oil supplier in May 2025, delivering 30.42 million barrels and accounting for over 40% of Tokyo’s total imports, according to official data.
Figures from Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry show that the UAE provided 40.8% of Japan’s total crude oil imports for the month. This marks a significant share as global energy markets continue to shift.
Japan’s total crude oil imports in May stood at 74.61 million barrels, with Arab oil producers supplying the lion’s share. Crude from Arab nations made up 90.9% of the total, amounting to 67.81 million barrels.
The data underscores the UAE’s growing role in securing Japan’s energy needs and highlights the continued dominance of Arab oil in the Japanese market.
