UAE Leads Global Clean Energy Revolution with Pioneering Projects and Sustainability Efforts

On January 26th, the UAE celebrated International Day of Clean Energy, marking the country’s ongoing commitment to shaping a sustainable and energy-secure future.

This day, which coincides with the founding of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), underscores the UAE's role in the global transition to renewable energy.

Dr. Nawal Al-Hosany, UAE's Permanent Representative to IRENA, highlighted the nation’s leadership in fostering international collaboration to designate this day. She emphasized the UAE’s dedication to clean energy as a driver of environmental protection, job creation, and sustainable development.

The UAE continues to break new ground in renewable energy, with the recent launch of the world’s first large-scale ‘round-the-clock’ gigascale project in Abu Dhabi. This cutting-edge facility combines solar power with battery storage, delivering up to 1 gigawatt of baseload power daily. It includes a 5.2GW solar plant and a 19 GWh energy storage system, setting a new benchmark in clean energy innovation.

Furthering its renewable energy ambitions, the UAE is preparing to complete the Al Ajban Solar Photovoltaic Project by 2026, which will generate 1.5 gigawatts of electricity and reduce emissions by over 2.4 million tonnes annually.

Home to some of the largest solar plants in the world, the UAE aims to achieve a clean energy capacity of 14.2 gigawatts by 2030, reaffirming its commitment to the Paris Agreement. The country’s Barakah Nuclear Power Plant, which has already helped reduce carbon emissions by 43,000 kilotonnes, plays a pivotal role in this effort.

With plans to explore advanced nuclear technologies and strengthen global partnerships, the UAE is poised to continue its leadership in clean energy innovation and climate action.
