The UAE has been appointed to lead a newly established international working group on artificial intelligence applications in satellite-aided search and rescue systems, following a landmark decision by the COSPAS-SARSAT organisation during its virtual session on June 13, 2025.

This major development comes after a series of international meetings hosted in Abu Dhabi from May 27 to June 5, where the UAE’s National Guard Command, via the National Search and Rescue Centre, presented a groundbreaking proposal to integrate AI into Mission Control Centre operations. The proposal was widely endorsed for its potential to significantly enhance the speed and accuracy of distress signal processing through satellite networks.

Representatives from 45 countries and major global bodies, including the ITU, ICAO, and IMO, praised the initiative, recognising the UAE's leadership in leveraging advanced technologies to improve life-saving operations worldwide.

Under the new framework, the UAE-led group will drive international collaboration, develop AI-powered tools for rescue coordination, and set global benchmarks for AI integration in space-based emergency systems. The move further cements the UAE’s strategic role in modernising search and rescue infrastructure and shaping the future of humanitarian response.
