Starting March 29, 2025, teenagers in the UAE can officially apply for a driving licence at the age of 17, following a new federal decree law on traffic regulations announced in October 2024.

The decision, which lowers the minimum driving age from 18 to 17 for cars and light vehicles, has sparked excitement among young motorists eager for independence.

For 17-year-old twins Rhea and Rohan Nihalani, this marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter.

"Whoever wins gets first dibs on driving our parents’ car,"

said Rhea, who is already planning solo trips to the beach and school. Rohan, a frequent metro user, looks forward to exploring places beyond public transport routes and even experiencing the simple joy of a drive-through meal.

Amaan Mohiddina, who turns 17 in April, sees driving as both a privilege and a responsibility.

“Learning to drive is about becoming self-dependent. I want to drive my younger sister to school and help my parents with errands,"

he said. However, he remains aware of the discipline required, vowing to prioritize safety from day one.

While many teens are gearing up to register, driving schools are awaiting official directives from the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). According to Fatima Raees, director of customer experience and marketing at Emirates Driving Institute, inquiries from eager applicants and their parents have surged. However, she clarified that while 17-and-a-half-year-olds can begin lessons and even pass the driving test, licences will only be issued upon turning 18.

As the UAE moves forward with this regulatory change, aspiring young drivers are preparing for a new era of mobility, one that comes with both freedom and responsibility.
