The UAE has announced plans to map out aerial corridors and develop a regulatory framework for piloted and autonomous flying taxis and cargo drones.

The initiative, presented at the World Governments Summit, aims to define these air routes and regulations within the next 20 months.

The air corridors will connect major international airports and iconic locations across the UAE, integrating flying taxis and drones seamlessly into the nation’s urban landscape. This collaboration will be led by the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) and the Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC), along with its entities – the Technology Innovation Institute (TII) and ASPIRE.

A key aspect of the project is the establishment of a comprehensive regulatory framework to ensure safety and operational efficiency. The initiative will also reduce traffic congestion by providing innovative transport solutions, enhancing connectivity across the nation.

Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director-General of the GCAA, highlighted the importance of air corridor mapping, stating that it will pave the way for the integration of Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) into the UAE’s infrastructure, transforming urban transportation.

Dr. Najwa Aaraj, CEO of TII, emphasized that the collaboration would improve urban connectivity and drive sustainable mobility solutions. Meanwhile, Stephane Timpano from ASPIRE noted that the initiative will help ease urban infrastructure pressures and foster resilient cities.

The UAE's push for air taxis and cargo drones reflects its ambition to lead the future of mobility, setting a global benchmark for sustainable transportation systems.
