UAE Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure Leads Efforts to Advance Hydrogen Sustainability with New Policies

Suhail bin Mohammed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, has announced that the UAE, in collaboration with the International Partnership for Hydrogen and Fuel Cells in the Economy (IPHE), is drafting new legislation to enhance the sustainability of hydrogen production.

These policies, designed for adoption by all IPHE member states, will also be implemented domestically to position hydrogen as a key fuel of the future.

Al Mazrouei highlighted the UAE's efforts to establish a clear roadmap and standards for the hydrogen sector.

"We are collaborating with global partners to develop sustainable and supportive legislations for the hydrogen sector,"

he stated.

The UAE’s hydrogen roadmap targets the production of 1.4 million metric tonnes of low-carbon hydrogen annually by 2031, supported by comprehensive regulations covering production, transportation, and export. Al Mazrouei noted the nation's strong representation on the Hydrogen Council through ADNOC and Masdar, further solidifying its leadership in the field.

Advancements in technology have significantly reduced hydrogen production costs, dropping by 40-50% from $10 per kilogram to $5–6 per kilogram. This reduction enhances the sector’s sustainability and efficiency, positioning the UAE as a global producer and exporter of low-carbon hydrogen energy.

With these efforts, the UAE is set to lead the charge toward a sustainable hydrogen economy, reinforcing its commitment to renewable energy and long-term environmental goals.
