UAE Unveils National Policy on Biofuels to Advance Clean Energy Agenda

The UAE has revealed the details of the National Policy on Biofuels, recently approved by the UAE Cabinet. The policy supports the country’s shift to clean and sustainable energy sources.

The policy has been developed by the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure (MoEI) in coordination with its strategic partners from the public and private sectors, aiming to provide sustainable fuel alternatives and further diversify the energy mix.

Suhail bin Mohammed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, emphasizes the significance of the National Policy on Biofuels in the UAE's decarbonization efforts. The policy aims to increase biodiesel consumption by 20% by 2050, reducing carbon emissions and diesel cars' carbon footprint significantly. It aligns with the UAE Energy Strategy 2050 and promotes circular economy principles, driving economic growth by utilizing waste for production. The Ministry collaborates with partners to develop regulations, establish standards, and implement criteria for biofuel production. This policy supports initiatives like the National Energy and Water Demand-side Management Programme and the UAE Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative.

Ali Khalifa Alshamsi, Director General of Emarat, views the National Policy on Biofuels as pivotal for supporting the UAE's leadership in clean energy production and diversification.

Saif Humaid Al Falasi, CEO of ENOC Group, praises the policy's alignment with the UAE's transition towards a flexible energy mix and the Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative, highlighting ENOC's contributions to biofuel usage since 2017.

Yousif bin Saeed Lootah, CEO of Lootah Biofuels, sees the policy as a game-changer for reducing emissions and promoting sustainability across various sectors, aligning with the UAE's ambitious goals for sustainable aviation fuel production.

Ahmad Bin Eisa Alserkal, Chairman of Alserkal Group, emphasizes the policy's role in decreasing the country's carbon footprint, enhancing energy security, and stimulating economic growth.

Bader Saeed Al Lamki, CEO of ADNOC Distribution, welcomes the policy as a milestone in the UAE's sustainable mobility journey.

Salem Bin Ashoor, Director and Head of Country at bp UAE, underscores the importance of biofuels in achieving net zero emissions globally, expressing bp's commitment to supporting the UAE's energy transition agenda through collaboration and expertise sharing.
